If you are going in person to file, we suggest you bring a copy of your closing statement, warranty deed (if you got it back from the recorder’s office) and Georgia driver’s license (with correct home address). If you are filing by mail, do so by Certified Mail, return receipt requested, and keep a copy of everything you send.
Remember, if you are 62 or older, check on extra Homestead Exemptions for Senior status or School Exemptions (these vary by County). If you are a surviving spouse of a veteran, peace officer or firefighter who was killed in the line of duty or are disabled, there also may be additional exemptions, as well.
Finally, with the dramatic economic downturn that has hit the real estate market due to the flood of foreclosures, this is an excellent time to considering filing an appeal of your real estate valuation.
